How Urban is India?

How does the choice of metrics affect the understanding of “urban India?”

How is the “urban” defined and calculated? How does definition change over time and, in turn, transform particular places? This case features a data visualization tool that allows learners to analyze the spatial impacts of social, economic, and policy parameters that define a city over time.

About the Case Author
Arindam primarily works on demographics and information systems. His other areas of interest lie in information design, urban economics and transportation systems. He co-anchors the Urban Informatics Lab. Prior to IIHS, Arindam has worked at the Institute for Financial Management and Research, where he worked on designing development finance products and credit scoring models; and with Nathan Associates (India), where he worked on areas like litigation economics and designing tools to assist in sports strategies. He has also helped in the design, implementation and analysis of large scale social surveys across India. At IIHS, he has been actively involved in developing a repository of Indian urban data and data dissemination systems.
