Ecological and Water Economist – School of Environment and Sustainability (SES)

Who are we?

The School of Environment and Sustainability (SES) at IIHS and its Long-term Urban Ecological Observatory (LTUEO), the first such mega-city observatory in the world, focus on the sustainable transformation of diverse human settlements and the social-ecological-technical  systems they are part of in the face of global change, especially urbanisation and climate change. The SES and LTUEO work on cutting edge scholarship and knowledge, education, and practice focused on solutions to wicked and complex environment and sustainability problems within the context of a rapidly urbanising India.

 

What are we looking for?

We are looking for an emerging scholar in ecological/ environmental/ water economics to build out IIHS’ research on the economic dimensions of all types of water use: blue, green, grey, black and their ecological, socio-economic and sustainability linkages. Prospective applicants will work with faculty within the SES and LTUEO as well as other Schools at IIHS, building on ongoing and emerging work in water systems, ecology and ecosystem services at multiple scales of governance and management. The ideal candidate will need to showcase quantitative and analytical rigour through his/her ability to conduct cutting edge economic modelling of ecological and water systems and contribute to salient and policy relevant scientific peer-reviewed publications. The candidate will also join the IIHS Secretariat for the Global Commission on the Economics of Water (GCEW).

 

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a PhD in ecological/ environmental economics or a related field, with an emphasis on water, water systems (e.g. rivers, lakes, reservoirs, dams, managed wetlands, rural and urban water systems including surface and ground-water based irrigation) and a proven research and publication record with at least three relevant publications in noted peer-reviewed journals. Ideal candidates will also have exposure to, or some knowledge of, agriculture as well as the urban (e.g. in urban systems, urban economics, urban studies, and urban planning), and engagement with policy-facing questions. Experience with public finance, valuation and green accounting will be useful.

 

Applicants should have a demonstrated depth and breadth of knowledge in various methodological approaches; experience in using a range of econometric tools and models (e.g. demand forecasting, time series analysis, integrated assessment modelling); exposure to modelling using ecosystem services quantification and valuation; the ability to generate insights by analysing large secondary data sets, the ability to design studies and generate novel primary and field data; and proficiency in using Python and/or R.

 

What will you be expected to do?

You will be engaged in using the latest quantitative economic tools to conduct cutting edge economic analyses using primary and secondary data linked to diverse techniques on diverse water and linked ecological systems at all scales of management and governance as a basis for understanding their contribution to sustainable transformations and development.  You will be expected to produce salient and policy relevant publications that will help inform management and policy. You will work with scholars and practitioners in other disciplines at SES/LTUEO to generate new interdisciplinary knowledge that informs and learns from practice and contributes to novel data generation.

Research Impact and Communications Specialist - School of Environment and Sustainability (SES)

The School of Environment and Sustainability at IIHS examines and answers questions around sustainable development and the environment, ecological restoration and nature-based solutions, and adapting to climate change impacts and risks. The School focuses on human settlements and socio-ecological systems across a continuum from semi-natural ecosystems to mega cities in India and the Global South.

 

SES has one of the largest concentrations of IPCC authors in a single South Asian institution with leadership positions in chapters across three major reports over the AR5 and AR6 cycles, and two SR1.5 derivative reports – the Summary for Urban Policymakers and GCF-supported Summary for Financial Decision Makers.

 

Job Description

The research impact and communications specialist will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers working on climate change and migration, and responsible for anchoring multimedia research impact strategy, project-level public engagement activities, strategic communication of project outputs, and anchoring project brand design. As part of the team, the incumbent’s involvement will include the creation and implementation of a strategic communication and dissemination plan with a focus on driving impact through narrative change (i.e., using communications and evidence-based outreach on climate change and migration to translate research into impact). The role will require working in close coordination with the IIHS Communications and Design team, Word Lab and Media Lab to ensure that project communications are harmonised with the core communication strategy and design at the institutional level.

 

There are two positions open for this role, one focussing on urban areas and one on rural areas. These are contractual positions for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent, with the potential to turn into a regular position over time.

  

Activities and Tasks

  • Leading overall strategic communication and dissemination planning including, but not limited to, a communications strategy for the project period differentiated by stakeholder groups, diversity of communications outputs including multimedia material and communication of findings for wide uptake;
  • Working closely with multiple local and internal partners in co-anchoring research impact tasks including developing a strategy to design and disseminate knowledge products and anchoring public-facing national and international events and workshops;
  • Working closely in and with the research team to co-develop a research impact strategy including planning and implementing activities for narrative change around climate migration; this will involve working with multiple stakeholders, designing and conducting participatory workshops, and understanding and anchoring need-based, evidence-based knowledge products;
  • Supporting the research team in creating tailored outputs and research-to-action activities at community, (sub-)national, and international levels in various formats including written content, multimedia outputs, stakeholder engagement activities and network building;

Person Specification

An ideal candidate should have:

  • An advanced degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, design, journalism, or development studies, with demonstrated knowledge/experience of climate change, environmental change, human geography or related fields;
  • 3-5 years of work experience in design, communications, journalism, or related areas;
  • Ability to develop, design, and implement a creative and evidence-based approach to communications and dissemination aimed at multiple audiences, while ensuring ideals of inclusion and equity of multiple voices and ideas;
  • Ability to connect with people and liaise with researchers from partner organisations and assist them in translating knowledge generated through  projects into action;
  • Experience of working with multilateral or bilateral agencies, donor-funded research projects, INGOs, think tanks, foundations, or consulting firms, on their outreach programmes would be an added advantage;
  • Excellent command of English; experience in writing for media or designing for multiple platforms; and the ability to write with precision and attention to detail; knowledge of regional languages like Odia/Malayalam/Kannada/Bengali would be an added advantage;

Job Description

The Senior Associate / Manager – SHD Office will be part of a small, core team which will assist in building out the School over the coming years. The core responsibility of this position will be to assist in the development and implementation of the School’s strategy.

 

The incumbent will support governance, strategic and operational planning, the management of resources (people, physical and financial), development and delivery of the academic courses, external engagement, relationship building with key partners and collaborators, and knowledge management and outreach. S/he will act as one of the primary links between SHD and various programmes, labs, and other schools at IIHS. Along with individual faculty and other team members, s/he will need to ensure coordination and timely delivery of outcomes.

 

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

Strategy and Planning:

  • Supporting operational and strategic planning, governance, budgeting, resource management and personnel planning;
  • Coordinating various initiatives of the School, including overall programme management as well as budgeting;
  • Planning, overseeing and implementing school-wide systems and processes for activities as needed;
  • Generating business development strategies (including periodic updates on the market landscape), and identifying opportunities and initiatives in partnership with faculty / staff and in line with the strategic objectives of the School;

The Urban Fellows Programme (UFP) is a scholarship-based, nine-month, full-time, residential, inter-disciplinary fellowship for recent graduates and young professionals from varied educational backgrounds or practice domains.

 

Job Description

The data management assistant will support the IIHS Urban Fellows Programme (UFP) faculty, learners and IIHS staff on a range of data management tasks related to the Learning Management System (LMS), and academic data related work for a range of collaterals.

 

The incumbent will work in close coordination with the IIHS Academic Office and relevant teams to ensure reliable data and Moodle support for programme management and recording. The role requires following the UFP timeline and processes throughout all stages, and interacting effectively and professionally, with an ability to maintain confidentiality of information and records.

About the School of Systems and Infrastructure

The School of Systems and Infrastructure (SSI) at IIHS aims at urban transformation with the intention of improving equity and environment outcomes for Indian cities, and its citizens. The School is concerned with key systems that govern the urban such as land and planning, water and sanitation, energy, housing, transportation, IT, and ITES. Job Description

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Sustainable Habitat and Climate Action Specialist. In this role, you will be responsible for conceptualising climate-aligned solutions for the built environment, including those linked to the neighborhood/ local community scale, by integrating multiple sources of knowledge such as climate science, environmental studies, building science, and engineering principles.

 

We expect you to be well versed in setting up transformative and transdisciplinary processes to imagine and deliver resilient and sustainable solutions. You will, for example, play a key role in conceptualising and implementing energy-centric, climate-aligned solutions at the building and neighbourhood-scale. In addition, we expect you to conceptualise climate-aligned solutions linked to various environmental services (e.g. water, sanitation, waste water, solid waste and drainage) including those linked to natural systems. You will also play a key role at the interface of environmental impact, buildings, and sustainable practices across multiple projects at IIHS.

 

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Conceptualising Sustainable Habitat Solutions:

  • Conducting comprehensive research and analysis of emerging evidence from multiple disciplines such as climate science, environmental studies, building science and engineering to identify various sustainable habitat options and barriers to, and enablers for, their widespread, sustained uptake;
  • Creating awareness on, and generating demand for, specific solutions at the building and neighbourhood-scale; these solutions would include those linked to energy-efficiency, water conservation, waste management, decentralised renewable energy systems, and nature-based and nature-oriented interventions, and, overall, to greenhouse gas emissions reduction and enhancement of local resilience to climate shocks and stresses;

  • Providing expertise on incorporating multiple sustainable household practices such as those linked to energy-efficient technologies, water & waste management techniques, enhanced renewable energy integration, and urban agriculture into building designs and neighbourhood plans;

The position of Team Leader- IIHS Trichy Office will be a regular position based out of Chennai involving 60% travel to various locations across Tamil Nadu, primarily Trichy. Junior Specialist – Solid Waste Management, Trichy

About the Project

IIHS is working with GIZ and Trichy Municipal Corporation to assist in operations of Micro Composting Centers (MCC) and integrating informal workers engaged in Solid Waste Management (SWM) in Trichy. The core of the proposed intervention involves strengthening MCC operations to ensure that Trichy’s entire biodegradable waste is efficiently managed, and to equip at least 20 informal workers engaged in SWM with enterprise-running skills in the SWM space.

The junior SWM specialist will be part of the proposed project and will be responsible for contributing towards implementation of this project in Trichy. S/he will support governance, strategic and operational planning, management of resources (people, physical and financial), development and delivery of the project outcomes.

 

The core responsibility of this role will be to coordinate with the operations teams of composting centers, the Trichy City Corporation, and informal workers engaged in solid waste management. The incumbent will act as one of the primary links between the IIHS team and SWM stakeholders engaged on the ground in Trichy.

The key deliverables of this position include:

  1. Rapid assessment of various components of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at the ULB level, along with subsequent policy (both state and central level);
  2. Based on the identified gaps, development of an OHS programme outline that will encompass:
    – Health and safety training;
    – Health surveillance with protocols;
    – Workplace safety and ergonomics;
    – Mental health support;
    – Legal protection;

The UPP is an education and capacity building programme for urban practitioners spanning disciplines and levels in public, private, academic and civil society sectors. Project Engineer (MEP) – Campus Development

About IIHS Campus Development

The proposed IIHS IOE main campus is located on a 54-acre freehold site at Kengeri, Bengaluru. The digitally-augmented buildings and facilities, slated to be built over three phases, are expected to enable interdisciplinary teaching-learningresearch and practice, and demonstrate the best examples of Indian design and traditional crafts.

 

The campus of the proposed IIHS IOE will aim to provide students and researchers the opportunity to immerse themselves in and innovate around India’s core urban challenges. The Campus Development team focuses on design, procurement and execution of the Campus at Kengeri. The work includes contract administration, design coordination, project management and handover of facilities to the IIHS Operations team.

 

Job Description

IIHS is looking to hire a project engineer (MEP) with around 4 to 6 years of work experience. This is a regular full-time position based out of Bengaluru. The incumbent will be a part of the Campus Development team but will need to work in close collaboration with other teams at IIHS, in particular with the IoT and Sustainable Energy Labs, and the Operations teams.

 

The project engineer is expected to oversee and supervise execution of all Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) work related to the IIHS Kengeri campus. S/he will also help operate and maintain MEP and other facilities at other IIHS sites, including three other facilities and a guesthouse in Bengaluru. She/he will help schedule, plan, forecast, resource and manage all relevant activities to ensure project quality, timeliness, and regulatory compliance.

 

Activities and Tasks

The responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Overseeing and being in charge of all the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) planning, execution, Operations and Maintenance;
  • Understanding the design intent and requirements from stakeholders and translating that into tangible deliverables, working with the stakeholders and consultants to draw up specifications, schematics, drawings etc.;
  • Once the approval from relevant consultants/ stakeholders is received, ensuring MEP work is carried out and associated civil work is coordinated with the campus team to meet requirements as per approved drawings, and within the time frame and progress plan for the approved construction program, in a cost and time effective manner;
  • Liaising with local authorities for the approval of MEP service drawings and service connections;
  • Coordinating with vendors and internal stakeholders to ensure that work is done as per design intent and specifications;
  • Ensuring that the installation, inspection and testing of all the MEP equipment, fittings and work implemented meets the specification and the consultant requirements;
  • Determining site material requirements in advance, including requirements in requisitions for procurement issued by consultants; coordinating with the procurement engineer / project manager for timely placement of orders;
  • Providing assistance in supplier-site co-ordination for site handling, storage installation and commissioning;
  • Verifying the accuracy of measurements for billing and approving the final billings;
  • Organising and participating in site meetings, reviewing inspection schedules; adhering to the Health Safety Security Environment (HSSE) checklist and witnessing commission testing of systems along with the consultant;
  • Implementing site HSSE policy and preparing the Job Safety Analysis (JSA); possessing complete awareness of the Permit to Work (PTW) system; ensuring that all health, safety and legal requirements are being met throughout the process;
  • Preparing status reports and regularly monitoring budgets, contractors and schedules;
  • Maintaining accurate records and an electronic database of all elements of the projects;
  • Ensuring daily project monitoring and regular progress reporting including identifying potential risks and constraints and developing a mitigation mechanism; supporting the Project Manager and ensuring timely addressing of project contractual deliverables;
  • Coordinating with other project personnel to ensure that deadlines, procedures, and other project requirements are met;
  • Providing support to other IIHS activities including academics, research, training, practice, operations and others;
  • Participating in all activities of Institution-Building at IIHS; carrying out tasks as assigned by IIHS; and travelling on IIHS work within the country as and when needed.

 

Structure and Reporting

The project engineer (MEP) will report to the Campus Development Head or the Senior Project Manager at the IIHS Kengeri campus and will need to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal teams and external individuals/organisations.

 

Person Specification
The ideal candidate should have:

  • A professional degree in Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering;
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience; prior experience as a project engineer on large scale building and infrastructure projects will be an advantage;
  • Practical knowledge of mechanical/ electrical/ plumbing engineering principles, practices and methods; environmental regulations; engineering project management methods; workplace safety; budgeting; employee supervision and personnel management;
  • Experience in the field of engineering, procurement and operations;
  • General understanding of building codes, mechanical codes, electrical codes and plumbing codes as they relate to the construction of project;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Flexibility and the ability to work well in a fast-paced environment;

Job Description

IIHS is looking to hire an architect with around 3 to 5 years of work experience. This position will be part of the Campus Development team at IIHS based out of Kengeri, Bengaluru. The responsibilities for this role will involve supporting design and documentation of campus development activities, including but not restricted to site planning, architectural design, detailed working drawings, 3d models, as-built drawings and analysis of various sustainability parameters. The work will also involve direct architectural intervention as per regular business practices, as well as research, publications, prototyping and creation of policies, standards and guidelines.

 

This is a contractual position for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent, with the potential to turn into a regular position over time.

 

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Conducting literature review and research for existing practices, standards, and innovations;
  • Site visits for primary data collection, including spatial, quantitative, and qualitative data;
  • Preparing architectural design, interior design, working drawings, renderings, representations and details, 3d models in SketchUp;
  • Conducting embodied energy and life cycle analysis;

Senior Associate – HSE Operations, Administration

Job Description

The Senior Associate – HSE Operations will play a pivotal role in IIHS’ Environment, Health and Safety management. The incumbent will be expected to help define and implement a robust HSE framework for the Institution, keeping in mind legal compliance and evolving institutional needs. Training IIHS staff, students, and other stakeholders on HSE aspects, conducting regular checks and audits, and ensuring HSE awareness and compliance across the Institutional will be a part of the role.

 

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Identifying and supporting the implementation of an EHS legal framework applicable to the operations of the Institution and advising the top management on these matters from time to time;
  • Preparing the requisite documentation for legal compliance, adherence to applicable national / international standards;
  • Conducting periodical risk assessments, inspection and observation of processes across all areas including construction, kitchen, recreation zones, conservation zones as well as basic office premises, planning mitigation actions for the identified risks;

Preferred experience:

  • Be a Certified Lead Auditor for ISO 45001:2018 safety management systems;

Job Description

The procurement associate plays a pivotal role in IIHS’ supply chain management. They are responsible for assisting in procuring goods and services essential to the company’s operations. The ideal candidate will be process oriented, organized, and will have experience working with ERP systems. They should possess vendor management skills to ensure cost-effective, timely and efficient procurement.

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Order Processing: Handling the end-to-end procurement process, which includes reviewing purchase requisitions on the ERP, obtaining quotations, preparing bid comparisons, and issuing purchase orders, accurately and in line with user needs and IIHS policies;
  • Vendor Management: Reviewing the IIHS vendor database and identifying vendors suitable for long term relationships; identifying, evaluating, and establishing relationships with selected vendors to ensure the delivery of high-quality products and services;

Senior Associate - Legal & Regulation

Job Description

As part of IIHS’ detailed legal work, we are looking for a candidate to fill the full-time position of Senior Associate – Legal & Regulation in our Delhi or Bengaluru offices.

 

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Legal Support (primary):
    • Assisting with legal and regulatory matters;
    • Contract drafting and contract management;
    • Transactional advisory and drafting, preferably with experience of:
          • matters pertaining to the ‘not for profit’ sector;
          • procurement and tendering;
          • construction contracts (Works, Design Build, PPP models);
          • transactional elements of IPR related matters;
    • Providing documentation support;

Person Specification

We are looking for a competent  and efficient lawyer with a minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Law and  at least 5 years of work experience in relevant areas, including preferably, experience of dealing with legal and regulatory issues in the non-for-profit sector.

 

Other qualifications required for this role, include:

  • Excellent analytical skills and a high degree of proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Excellent communication skills in written English;
  • Good communication skills and fluency in Hindi/Kannada (written and spoken);
  • Ability to undertake rigorous research on contracts, labour law, taxation law, privacy/date protection legislation, case law, institutional structures and relevant legislative matters, with pronounced evidence of strong drafting and transactional skills;
