Beneath the surface: Understanding groundwater and wastewater treatment for integrated water management

The over-reliance on groundwater to meet fresh water needs in India has made it an  increasingly overexploited resource, especially in the absence of coherent real-time monitoring mechanisms. The current book documents the intensive efforts on IIHS Campus, Kengeri to monitor, in real-time, the judicious use of groundwater resources on the Campus as a part of its integrated water management system including surface water and recycled water towards achievement of a net-zero water goal.  The restoration of a dilapidated open well by traditional well diggers of the region establishes a case for utilisation of shallow groundwater to prevent depletion of deep aquifers. The construction of a prototype Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) for on-site treatment of greywater and blackwater tests the possibilities of using recycled water on the Campus. It is a timely book to address the growing water crisis in India with focus on regional, on-site sustainable solutions.
