Abarna is an intern with the Practice Programme at IIHS, where she applies her background in sociology and psychology to practical challenges. She earned her undergraduate degree in sociology and psychology from Lady Doak College in Madurai, where she built a strong foundation in understanding human behaviour and social structures. Continuing her studies, Abarna completed her master’s in sociology from Madras University in 2024, gaining a deeper understanding of social theories and research methods.
Abarna also gained valuable experience working with NGOs working in diverse fields. She interned at People’s Watch, a Madurai-based organisation dedicated to protecting the human rights of underprivileged communities, where she contributed to research projects aimed at advancing human rights advocacy. She also interned at Aniyam, an NGO supporting the welfare of queer individuals. At Aniyam, Abarna served as an executive on the notable project ‘Sevigal’, which offered counseling services to individuals facing mental health challenges.
Abarna is motivated to work at the grassroots level and eager to apply what she has learned in the classroom to real-life situations. Her studies have given her a commitment to support and represent marginalised communities. Her interest is in the historical development of societies, especially in how cultural and religious changes affect social dynamics and contribute to discrimination. She is particularly interested in the connections between culture, religion, and politics, and how these relationships influence identities and social structures.
In her free time, Abarna enjoys reading on these subjects, favouring sources that present a direct view of history. This helps her understand contemporary society and strengthens her commitment to advocacy and social equity.
