Improvements to Existing Onsite Sanitation Systems: Demonstrations of Technologies
CWIS | November 2025
Abstract
This CWIS report presents the comprehensive assessment and interventions carried out for improving existing onsite sanitation systems in Trichy. The assessment identified improper sizing, poor construction, inadequate operation and maintenance and low community awareness as the major causes for failure of systems. The project demonstrated both retrofitting existing systems as well as replacing them with low-cost technological options for safe containment among households and bulk generators, which reported significant improvements in sanitation conditions of users at manageable costs. These demonstrations highlight the feasibility of low-cost, inclusive and sustainable sanitation improvements at scale with community engagement and institutional support.
