What we talk about when talking about housing

Gautam Bhan  | 2018

Description

Gautam Bhan’s lecture focused on the semantic understanding of the housing debate and creating a discussion beyond conventional beliefs of what constitutes planning and policy. He focused on the limitations through what he called the ‘thought experiment’. Using the tool of provocation, he wanted people to reimagine the power of language as a form of practice to work around the challenges of housing. He established a set of given contexts that involved auto-construction, the role of the state, market trends and legacy of discourse. Within this context of which he introduced seven new words: Edge, Repair, Stall, Squat, Locate, Count and Value; which he suggested to be used when addressing the state of housing.
