Mitigating Sewage Overflow through Hydraulic Load Management: Lessons from Panjapur STP, Trichy
CWIS | November 2025
Abstract
The report, developed under the CWIS initiative for Tiruchirappalli City Corporation, assesses sewage overflow issues at the Panjapur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and outlines solutions for its improvement. Operational inefficiencies such as hydraulic overloading and poor coordination among pumping stations and grit accumulation, were identified through field assessments. A phased action plan—covering communication protocols, real-time monitoring, grit management, operator training, and long-term infrastructure upgrades—were proposed, leading to nearly 80 percent reduction in overflow. The approach offers a replicable model for efficient STP management in other urban local bodies.
