Fleeing the Scorched Earth: Climate Change, Migration and Livelihood Strategies in Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu: A Case Study in The Context of Just Transitions

Anuraag Srinivasan, Sundara Babu Nagappan | May 2026

This report examines the complex intersections of climate change and labor migration in Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu. It details how erratic climatic events, such as severe droughts and unseasonal floods, devastate agriculture and act as primary “push” factors for cyclical migration. By analyzing the roles of caste, debt, and land ownership, the study frames these movements as “climate-augmented”. It concludes by emphasizing the need for “just transitions” to address structural vulnerabilities.
