This training manual presents a structured training on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) of sanitation workers in urban India, with a focus on reducing hazards and risks during cleaning and maintenance of sewers, septic tanks, community and public toilets, and wastewater treatment plants. Designed for government officials, urban local bodies, and sanitation practitioners, the manual integrates conceptual inputs on occupational hazards, risk assessment, standard operating procedures (SoPs), and simulation exercises, while also discussing the mental health and wellbeing aspects of sanitation workers. This manual offers a two-day programme adopting a service-chain approach from containment to disposal; it embeds safety measures at each stage while supporting hands-on learning. The training manual equips participants to identify risks, implement safety protocols, and strengthen safe and accountable sanitation service delivery systems.
