Migration and Health: Charting Questions for Future Research

Abstract

The field of migration and health is rapidly expanding globally. In India, fewer studies have examined migrant health. A large proportion of internal migrants are labour migrants that work as daily-wage labourers in the urban informal economy. In this case, migrant health outcomes are closely tied to other forms of vulnerabilities that are associated with the nature of work and the setting where this work takes place. We highlight key health challenges and aim to explicitly locate them in the broader environment within which migrants experience the same. We provide a snapshot of migrant health concerns, such as occupational health, infectious diseases, maternal and child health and access to healthcare services at the destination region. In doing so, we also reflect on gaps in research, policy and practice.
