Vivek Hasyagar is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in ecology and taxonomy of earthworms at the Department of Applied Zoology, Mangalore University. He surveyed earthworms in the Western Ghats and West coasts of Karnataka and also worked on vermicomposting by earthworms collected from various places in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. He has collected 34 species of earthworms in the study area and reported an earthworm species Amynthas alexandri and the giant earthworm Drawida sp. grandis gp. (3 feet long) and the mating behavior of the arboreal earthworm Perionyx minimus, recorded for the first time in Karnataka.
Apart from his research on earthworms, he also worked on different taxa viz., reptiles, birds, butterflies and mammals. He worked as a coordinator for the People Biodiversity Register in Karkala taluk, Udupi district and a field assistant for research associates of the Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute (EMPRI) during their butterfly survey and their work on behavioural ecology of the lion tailed macaque in Agumbe Ghats, tiger and elephant survey (sign survey and camera trap) in different landscapes of Kudremukha National Park. He also volunteered in a field awareness program regarding snake bite mitigation in and around Agumbe.
