Summary

Tamil Nadu has accelerated FSSM by establishing treatment facilities, resulting in the operation of 26 FSTPs and 44 fecal sludge co-treatment practicing STPs. Sustaining the performance of treatment systems is a major milestone in achieving complete sanitation, and FSSM activities should be monitored to ensure better performance. In this context, the application of technological advancements for efficient monitoring, optimization, and standardising of fecal sludge management services can be considered. This paper aims to discuss options for integrating an IT and IoT-enabled monitoring and decision-making system with FSSM, from fecal sludge desludging to treatment facility effluent disposal.
