Riverfront Development and its Consequences for Aquatic Biodiversity

Several aspects about riverfront development projects are discussed, but the impacts on aquatic biodiversity and riverine ecology are not sufficiently highlighted. Outlining the ecological nature of rivers, their biodiversity and ecosystem function, the article illustrates the consequences of large-scale development activities which are typical to riverfront development projects to these fundamental processes. Taking examples from some existing policies, possible considerations and alternatives for these projects, especially in India are explored.
