Inclusive Sanitation: Challenges in Service Delivery to Urban Poor

Background

Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), the fourth largest corporation in Tamil Nadu, India, with a population of 0.91 million, faces challenges in providing adequate sanitation facilities, especially for the urban poor. The city has a total of 294 urban poor settlements, both notified and non-notified. To address this issue, the CityWide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) programme is being implemented in Trichy to achieve equitable and sustainable sanitation services. This paper highlights the challenges faced in sanitation service provisioning in Trichy.
