Urban Transport in India: Challenges and Recommendations

Abstract

Road congestion, lack of parking spaces, air pollution, road accidents, etc., are some of the issues faced by urban India that adversely impact the mobility needs of its population. With the objective to understand and address the complex challenges faced by the urban transport sector, this paper reviews the main trends, major challenges, and present policies and programs initiated by the Government. Synthesising recommendations from 18 renowned urban transport experts from across the country, as well as global best practices, the paper recommends a set of policy interventions that aim to holistically address the problems and challenges in this sector.
