Introduction:

The seriousness of challenges associated with urban water supply and sanitation in India have been recognised only recently. After decades of neglect, the first national effort to invest in this sector commenced in the 1970s, and found some priority in the next two decades as a part of various national and state level schemes culminating most recently in the Swachh Bharat Mission.
This chapter looks at the state of delivery of urban water and sanitation services in India and examines key issues in service delivery.
