Nabina Chakraborty

Nabina Chakraborty is a filmmaker–producer, who is currently working as an Associate in the Media Lab. Along with audio-visual documentation, teaching and research work at the organisation, she has been a part of the Urban Lens film festival team for the last two years. Her video installation ‘Nuovo Metropolis’ was part of the City Scripts 2022, IIHS’ urban writings festival.

She has recently co-produced and co-directed a short film ‘Happy Birthday’ which premiered at the IIHS Urban Lens film festival, Bengaluru. The film follows the journey of a couple in the city of Bengaluru on the special day of Anjali, the female protagonist’s birthday. It is a story about love in the times of hate.

Her interests lie at the intersection of media, research, ecology and sociology. Her upcoming project, ‘My Love letter to Chiplun’ will focus on the solastalgia faced by the urbanisation of her hometown, Chiplun, in western Maharashtra.

She completed her MA in Mass Communication from A. J. Kidwai Mass Communication and Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia in 2019. Her graduation film, ‘Iq Rah – One Path, Many Journeys’, has been selected for various film festivals like IAWRT Film Festival, Woodpecker Film Festival, Cut In National Film Festival and Golden Bee International Film Festival.

After her graduation, she worked as a production coordinator and assistant editor on ‘Invisible Demons’, a film by Rahul Jain, which is currently being streaming on MUBI. Her keen interest in films led her to be a festival assistant in the 2020 IAWRT Asian Women’s Film Festival, Delhi. In 2020, she assisted national award winning filmmaker Aparna Sanyal on the PSBT Film Challenge. Along with her she also co-wrote and co-directed videos for Sahapedia.

She is also a keen photographer and her photograph ‘Urban snow – Chatt Puja’ was published by The Guardian as one of the best images of 2019.
