Law Associate - Land Project

Job Description
The Law Associate(s) shall be a part of an IIHS Project Team working on land records management and associated e-governance support initiatives. The Law Associate(s) will work on legal aspects of land administration, including legal, institutional, policy and implementation issues on the specifics of land ownership, use, transfer, registration, titling, informality, varied tenure systems and other related legal-policy issues, involving field-work as required. This will involve carrying out a detailed evidence based interpretative analysis of legislative, judicial, and institutional issues and outcomes on the ground as a part of the national and state level initiatives.

IIHS is recruiting two candidates for the position of Law Associate.

Activities and Tasks
The Law Associate(s) – Land Project will be required to:

  • Be a part of the team working on land governance and management initiatives and carry out detailed secondary and primary data collection and analyses on ongoing initiatives in select states and at the national levels;
  • Carry out collection and analyses of relevant laws, policies, regulations and databases/records pertaining to land and its governance and management in study states and locations;
  • Assist in assessing and in developing improved laws, policies, regulations and systems for governance and management of land, including their documentation/recording, transactions, litigation, case law and other relevant aspects;
  • Translate the experiences from practice into knowledge to contribute to research – this would include publication of journal articles, working papers, case studies etc.;

Person Specification
We are looking for bright and enthusiastic lawyers, preferably with two-three years of work-experience. The candidate should at least have a Bachelor’s degree in law and excellent knowledge of law and policy, including aspects related to land law administration and exposure to/experience in land records management. Experience in litigation and commercial transactions in land related aspects will be an advantage.

The candidate shall have good analytical skills and a high degree of proficiency in MS Word and Office applications. The position requires excellent spoken and written English; additionally, spoken and reading skills in Hindi or Kannada are desirable. Planning Associate - Land Project

Job Description
The Planning Associate shall be a part of an IIHS Project Team working on land records management and associated e-governance support initiatives. Activities and Tasks
The Planning Associate will be required to:

Associate – Planning & GIS

Job Description
The Associate – Planning & GIS will be partly working (50% time) on a project on the improved management of land, and partly (50% time) on a project that is interested in tracing incremental growth of informal settlements and housing in Delhi.

Activities and Tasks
The Associate – Planning & GIS will be required to:

  • Combine expertise in Planning, GIS and Law for improved management of land including data, maps and systems of ownership, use, transfer, registration, and related legal and policy issues;
  • Assist with aspects related to GIS, helping support the detailed institutional and evidence based analysis of the ground situation in the context of national and state level initiatives, as well as assistance in implementation of various such initiatives;
  • Carry out detailed secondary and primary data collection and analyses on ongoing initiatives in select sites, various states and at the national levels;
  • Carry out collection and processing of relevant maps and map-based information; digitization of spatial information; and production of outputs using mapping and GIS software;

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (Planning, Architecture, Urban Studies, Geoinformatics, or Social Sciences with strong Urban content);
  • 2 -3 years of experience in implementing geo-spatial and planning analyses, different methods of data collection;
  • Expertise in advanced remote sensing and GIS analysis using VHR imagery;

IIHS has launched the Urban Fellows Programme to foster a new generation of urban practitioners and change makers, to become part of shaping this transition.

The Urban Fellows Programme (UFP) is a fully funded, nine-month, full-time, inter-disciplinary fellowship for recent graduates and young professionals from varied educational backgrounds or practice domains. The UFP 2017-18 is based out of the IIHS Bangalore City Campus. The fellowship runs from August 2017 to the end of May 2018.

Job Description

This position will be responsible for delivering multi-sector placements, internships, and effective career development support for IIHS graduates, starting with the Urban Fellows Programme.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing the placement and career support system, including creating a database of suitable organisations and institutions where IIHS graduates can potentially find full time employment and internships, reaching out and establishing relationships, conducting interactive events; as well as providing support to graduates by advising in selecting career paths, preparing CVs, and supporting with interviews; etc. This will involve in-depth interaction with IIHS faculty, learners, advisors, and institutional networks to identify and engage with potential employers such as think-tanks, development sector organisations, NGOs, public sector, private sector, academic institutions, Government organisations, consulting firms and other organisations. Market research and intelligence initiatives to identify and track fresh placement opportunities will also be part of the job.

Activities and Tasks

The Manager – Placements, Internships & Career Support will be expected to provide career development support, ensure successful internships, and deliver full-batch placements for graduates of IIHS. Specifically, the incumbent will:

  • Create and maintain an updated database of suitable think tanks, development sector organisations, NGOs, public sector, private sector, academic institutions, Government organisations, consulting firms and other organisations where IIHS graduates can potentially find full time employment and internships;
  • Undertake research in order to be aware of existing and potential employment opportunities and internships nationally and internationally with above mentioned organisations;
  • Strengthen links with existing IIHS partner organisations and establish new links with above mentioned organisations for potential employment and internships;
  • Create and maintain information on career development support, internships and placement activities being undertaken by institutions similar to IIHS around the country;

This position requires a motivated individual with the initiative and drive to identify and target multi-disciplinary employment opportunities to ensure placements for increasing numbers of IIHS graduates every year. Job Description

Executive – Finance & Accounts

Job Description
The position will be based in Chennai and will be responsible for all the Finance and Accounting related activities of the IIHS Chennai operations.

Activities and Tasks

The responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Making cost center–wise entries in accounting software;
  • Handling bills receivable and bills payable;
  • Revenue recognition as per accounting standards;
  • Fixed assets accounting;
  • Maintenance of cash and Bank details;
  • Document management;

Job Description
The Practice Team is responsible for providing cutting-edge and integrated solutions to India’s urban development challenges by bringing together faculty and experts across diverse domains of knowledge and practice; exposing learners to real-life problems and integrating the practice into academics and research.

This is a full time position, in the Practice Team at IIHS based out of Chennai. As part of the Engineering, Planning and Implementation team for TNUSSP, the Senior Specialist will be responsible for the provision of technical and implementation support. The deliverables of this component include:

  • Identification, assessment and design of urban sanitation solutions and innovations;
  • Supporting ULBs and State Government and anchor the preparation of City Sanitation Plans and programs, and Detailed Project Reports for sanitation solutions;
  • Adaptation and testing of toolkits for planning, and benchmarking performance of sanitation systems;

Associate – Urban Informatics Lab (UIL)

About the Urban Informatics Lab
The aim of the Urban Informatics Lab (UIL) is to facilitate access to and consumption of data, by creating a space for researchers of Indian urbanisation to share data and conceptualise alternative or improved forms of data creation, usage and dissemination.

The UIL has been developed as a space within IIHS to share insights about our cities, arising from various information systems such as primary data collection and surveys, secondary data analysis, and geospatial visualization, as well as to facilitate further discussion on the same. Job Description
The Associate position is a full time position located in the Urban Informatics Lab. The Associate is expected to be involved with various projects of the UIL, including leading and managing particular processes within the Lab. The ideal candidate would be comfortable with applying statistical analysis techniques for solving urban problems in a data scarce environment. The candidate should be comfortable working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment and be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines. The candidate should have prior experience in any of the following: applied economics, applied statistics, geo-spatial analysis and/or software coding in the development sector, information science including data design and communication.

The position will involve providing analytical support for IIHS research and practice projects, and for teaching quantitative research methods. She/he will work with secondary data sets from various sources such as the Census, NSSO, Economic Census, Annual Survey of Industries, National Family Health Survey, as well as geo-spatial data from multiple sources. The Associate will also assist in primary data collection through surveys. The Associate will be working on projects related to economic development, urban demographic trends across various scales, land markets, and urban food systems.

The position will be part of the Resource Development Team at IIHS. Resource mobilization and development is a strategically important function at IIHS and is recognized as a critical enabler of institutional growth and sustainability.

This Practice Associate – Urban Risk & Resilience will be housed in the Practice Programme. The position seeks a person whose research interests broadly align with issues of urban risk and exposure, vulnerability, institutional and local coping capacities, particularly in the context of Indian policy context. This candidate will be expected to join the on-going research on disasters risk resilience and climate risk, particularly the research on socio-economic and political implications of extreme events in coastal and hilly areas. IIHS Design Lab is looking to hire a product designer with around 2 to 5 years of work experience. This is a full-time position in the Design Lab at IIHS, based out of Bengaluru. The responsibilities for this position will include supporting Design Lab projects and leading on identified components of these projects, that will include but not be restricted to furniture design, display interface design, visual communication and retrofit in development sector infrastructure such as health care, education, housing, green spaces, sustainable mobility, green buildings, etc. The work will involve direct product design intervention as per regular business practices, as well as research, publications, prototyping and creation of policies, standards and guidelines.

Associate Architect (Research and Documentation)

Job Description
The Housing Team at IIHS is looking for an architect or spatial design expert who can anchor the documentation of a series of formal, informal and self-constructed settlements across Delhi and Bengaluru, and possible other sites. The documentation imagines Measured Drawing as the starting point for a rich inquiry into the nature of built form in the identified settlements. The inquiry will be assisted by a small team of architects/planners and facilitated by anchors in the local communities.

The form of the documentation will include detailed descriptive visualizations of current built form and temporal snapshots of selected aspects over different time periods—including but not limited to past developments, specific events in the socio-cultural and socio-economic geography of the locations, and potential trajectories of future growth. The documentation will cover planned and unplanned growth at the layout/settlement level as well as for identified individual households.

This is a contracted position for an initial term of 11 months, likely to be renewed for at least another term.

Activities and Tasks (Indicative)
The Associate Architect’s scope of services would include, but not be limited to, the following:
