‘Electric Shadow’ is the literal translation of ‘Diàn-yïng’, the Mandarin term for film.
In 2011, West Heavens Project, an organisation working on exploring dialogues between Indian and Chinese philosophy, organised a film festival titled ‘You Don’t Belong: Pasts and Futures of Indian Cinema’. Many Indian filmmakers, academics and visual-artists participated in this festival which was curated by film scholar Ashish Rajadhyaksha with the support of Magic Lantern Foundation, Delhi.
A few years later, the filmmaker revisits China and reflects on the places, landscapes and therefore histories that come to us mediated through the cinematic image. The film playfully ponders on image-creation as an integral part of cultural propagation, while revisiting the films at the festival and looking at the mainstream impressions on both cultures.
