CLIMATE AND DEVELOPMENT NETWORK (CDKN) INTEGRATED URBAN CLIMATE ASSESSMENT
“Future Proofing Indian Cities” is a £0.5 million project that will undertake the first metropolitan integrated climate assessment for Bangalore and Madurai. This 14 –month collaborative project between IIHS, Atkins UK and University College London (UCL) will break new ground in preparing urban adaptation and mitigation opportunities for climate financing. The project aims to help stakeholders in Bangalore (led by IIHS) and Madurai (led by Atkins) respond to potential climate hazards, enable the transition to a low carbon economy while reducing poverty and catalyzing economic development. In doing so, it seeks particularly to enhance local ownership and implementation of policy processes.

ROCKEFELLER – IIHS URBAN INDIA POLICY SUPPORT PARTNERSHIP 2012-2014.
This partnership seeks to leverage the potential for urban transformation in India by exploring inadequately analysed cross-sectoral themes and areas of potential policy and programme interventions. The $0.4million, two-year partnership was initiated in late 2012 and will continue through October 2014. IIHS will produce a series of working papers, policy briefs,digital interviews,  and a range of teaching-learning material that are all directed towards addressing various kinds of urbanisation challenges being faced by Indian cities. Each of the knowledge outputs is targeted at national, state and city policymakers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, civil society leaders, and communities and local stakeholders. This project will engage with policy concerns that span the growth-equity-resilience-transformative development spectrum, especially when viewed against the landscape of the global South.

UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME: URBAN POVERTY STRATEGY (2013-2017)
IIHS helped design UNDPs Urban Poverty Strategy for India over 2013-2017.  UNDP has had a historically strong rural development presence in India. Their new country programme shits their focus to interventions in urban areas, responding to increasing challenges and tremendous opportunity for change in cities. Multiple stakeholders from the government, public sector, private sector, communities as well as other potential donors were engaged with to help build an operationalisable partnership strategies for UNDP. The final output was in the form of a strategy report.

MAHILA HOUSING TRUST (SEWA) PROJECT
MHT, a member of the broader Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) network, is implementing an urban sanitation project in Katihar, Bihar with support from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.The vision of the project is to ‘develop, test and refine business models and best practices’, for urban sanitation that can then be scaled up to extend to other parts of Bihar. The project aims to extend ‘sensitive sanitation solutions’ to at least 1,200 households by the way of loans for hand pumps and toilets, and create a local resource pool by training and generating employment for 250 people, predominantly women. IIHS is MHT’s research partner developing a research framework to test the effectiveness, sustainability, and scalability of proposed interventions. This will be done through undertaking baseline and endline studies to track the effectiveness of the programme and trace its impact.

BANGALORE DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (BDA) KNOWLEDGE PARTNERSHIP
The IIHS has helped support the BDA in the development of the revised Bangalore Master Plan 2035. This includes advisory support in structuring, procurement and selection of consultants;  a human resource assessment and capacity building plan; and theestablishment of a fully functional GIS cell and data to support Plan execution

GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKAREVISION OF KEY KARNATAKA URBAN LEGISLATIONS
Support to a process of comprehensive revision of the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act to bring it into consonance with decentralisation provisions of the 74th Amendment, Constitution of India.  This involves conceptual understanding of the policy and legislative issues involving urban governance, the institutional structures as well as political economy considerations. It also included support to the on-going attempt to revise Development Control Regulations for Bangalore.

GOVERNMENT OF NCT OF DELHI
An IIHS team provided support to the revision of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957. The team was specifically tasked by the Committee of Experts asked to revise the Act with providing inputs on the provision of basic environemental and social services to informal settlements and low-income settlements.
