Upendra graduated and worked as a dentist before transitioning into public health a decade ago. He has been doing health policy and systems research in areas of non-communicable diseases and tobacco control. His PhD work explored the role of health systems in enhancing care for chronic health conditions among urban poor. He explores how non-health sectors impact population health (and health inequities) and how to promote intersectoral actions for health. At IIHS, Upendra’s work revolves around Urban Health.  At IIHS his research and teaching in this area intersects with several of ongoing work in other areas.
