Soumyashanto Mandal is an Urban Planner. He has worked across varied projects in the urban domain including masterplans for cities and plans for residential townships. His core areas of work and research are infrastructure, peri-urban development and sustainability.


At IIHS, he works in the Infrastructure and Governance Stream within the PEAK programme. His work focusses on industrial corridors, mega infrastructure and associated dynamics, particularly in the Bangalore region.


Previously he has worked on the Revised Master Plan for Bangalore (for 2031) and Perspective Plan for Machilipatnam (for 2051) in the areas of sustainability, infrastructure development, open space guidelines, land use strategies and transportation.


As a lecturer at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut, he has taught courses in Sustainability, Sociology and Human Settlements and Urban Development. He has also been a guest faculty member at BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore.


Soumyashanto holds a Bachelors degree in Architecture from National Institute of Technology – Tiruchirappalli (2010) and Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning from CEPT University Ahmedabad (2012). He was the recipient of the GICEA Gold Medal and the Best Thesis Award in Urban and Regional Planning at CEPT University.
