Mainak is a senior professional with functional domain expertise in Urban Planning, Real Estate Development and Architecture. He has extensive experience in large-scale master planning/ infrastructure planning for urban development projects such as Smart Cities, DMIC Townships, Abu Dhabi Airport, Bangalore Airport, Delhi Metro, industrial parks and Colombo Port City.  He has managed multi-disciplinary teams while working with international agencies including Mackellar UK, Mott MacDonald, Wilbur Smith Associates, PMDC UAE and WS Atkins.

 

Prior to joining IIHS, Mainak was in a business development role for the Global Design Centre (GDC) at WS Atkins, strategising Atkins’ growth in theIndian market for urban planning, infrastructure and transportation opportunities. He has previously led the Urban Planning and Landscape department for GDC at WS Atkins (India) Pvt Ltd and has also worked for the first private greenfield airport operator in India at Bangalore (BIAL), as part of their Real Estate Development team in a techno-commercial role, apart from a brief stint as the head of Master planning for the Abu Dhabi International Airport Free Zone.

 

In his career spanning 20 years, he has been involved in projects of varied scales in the capacity of a consultant, developer, contractor as well as a client. Apart from contributing to development projects related to architecture, urban planning and infrastructure development such as City Master Plans and City Development Plans, he has been involved in projects that have had significant urban impact to improve people’s lives, whether in transport infrastructure projects improving urban connectivity or industrial infrastructure projects that propel growth and employment.

 

Mainak’s area of interest encompasses all aspects of development and management of cities and regions including strategic intent, master planning, urban regeneration, policy and guidance, economic development, funding and implementation strategies. He has managed and delivered several multi-disciplinary projects for clients in both public and private sector in the Indian sub-continent and ME region. His client management rigor has led to high-impact and innovative forays in stakeholder engagement, future-proofed approaches, strategic advocacy, integrated urban modelling tools and data analytics to inform strategy, policy and planning.

 

At IIHS, as part of the Practice vertical, he envisages to enhance the planning portfolio aided by research and thought leadership addressing urban development and infrastructure related issues including urbanisation, transport, water, energy, technological and digital transformations, climate change, and consider implications for client establishments, governance and policy.
