Chandrasekhar BhaveChandrashekhar B. Bhave is the Chairperson of the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) – India’s first prospective National University for Research and Innovation to address challenges of urbanisation through an integrated programme of education, research, consulting and advisory services.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

Career Highlights

Chandrashekhar was the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), India’s capital markets regulator from 2008 to 2011. He was also the chairperson of the Asia-Pacific regional committee and a member of the Technical and the Executive Committees of the IOSCO, over this period.

Chandrashekhar started his career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1975. He was the Collector in Nanded and worked in the Finance and Industries departments of the Government of Maharashtra and the Petroleum Ministry of the Government of India. He then worked in SEBI as a Senior Executive Director from 1992–1996, helping create the regulatory infrastructure for Indian capital markets.

Chandrashekhar then quit the IAS to set up the National Securities Depository (NSDL) in 1996 and was its Chairman and Managing Director from 1996 to 2008. NSDL was the first depository in India and became operational in 1996 – the settlements in Indian stock exchanges are in paperless form today. The NSDL was entrusted with setting up the Government of India’s Tax Information System and the Central Record Keeping System for the new Pension scheme.

Awards & Recognition

Chandrashekhar is recognised for his stewardship of SEBI and his contributions as the head of the National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) that was responsible in revolutionising the Indian capital market by getting market players to accept the new system of dematerialised shares and debentures. He has also won awards from the Government of Maharashtra for outstanding work in the area of family welfare and excellence in administration.

Chandrashekhar has several professional affiliations that include:

  • Member of the board of the Public Interest Oversight Board (PIOB), Madrid which supervises the work of the standard-setting bodies of the International Federation of Accountants from the perspective of public interest.
  • Member of the City of London Advisory Council for India.
  • Trustee of the IFRS Foundation, London that oversees the International Accounting Standards Board.
